What does ecological mean?
A toothbrush made of plastic does not quite qualify as an ecological product. At the same time, we also do not want to forego plastic completely, since it gives the toothbrush a smooth surface, is hygienic, stable, etc. The replaceable head principle helps to significantly reduce the amount of plastic required, since a large part of the toothbrush can be used over a long period, which is ecological. The development of newer, alternative plastics that do not contain crude oil and that decompose quickly is also a step towards environmentally friendly products.
The goal of yaweco
is to observe these aspects and use alternative materials whenever it is deemed more effective and technically feasible.
The question of whether it is sensible and necessary to ensure environmental compatibility in this field can be easily answered through a rough calculation. Let us consider the European market, where yaweco is mainly active and which corresponds to approximately 500 million people. Every fifth household uses electrical toothbrushes, i.e. approximately 80% of the 500 million use a hand toothbrush. That makes 400 million toothbrushes. These should be replaced every 8-12 weeks. In reality, this is only done twice a year on average. The effective number of toothbrushes therefore increases to 800 million. This is a realistic number that gives you an approximate idea of the height of the garbage mountain. In terms of weight: The yaweco replaceable head toothbrush can be considered normal or average when it comes to the size and weight. It weighs 19 g, 2 g for the head and 17 for the handle. If the entire 19 g toothbrush were to be disposed of, this would result in a total garbage weight of 15.2 tons.
